Smart Numbers
Smart numbers allow people to remember your number through recognisable words rather than actual numbers. Having your business name in your phone number gives your business an edge over your competitors.
An example of a smart number (also known as phone words) is our number 1300 TELCOTALK. That’s certainly a better option than trying to remember 1300 835 268.
Best of all, you can choose whatever words you want, as long as they’re available. This way, you can place your business’s name in the number.

How Smart Numbers Work A standard phone keypad looks like the picture to the left. Beneath the the numbers 2 - 9 are the letters of the alphabet. These letters can be used to align with telephone numbers. An example of this is our number 1300 telcotalk. If you push the buttons spelling the letters you will have entered 1300 835 268. In this example you will notice there are 3 letters left over. As soon as you dial the 6th number, it connects, so the extra numbers don't have any affect on the call you make. This is called over dial (we recommend no more than 3 number over dials be used) |
Here are 8 Benefits of using a smart number for your business
Words are remembered more easily than numbers
People remember names or words much easier than they remember numbers. And when a potential customer remembers your phone word, you're far more likely to get their call next time they're in the market for your services.
New phone words for specific promotions can track the progress of the campaign. We provide you with free online reporting and tracking of your 1300/1800 number. Many clients choose to use different 1300 numbers for different promotions as they are able to track the uptake and response to their ads and thus evaluate where their advertising budget is being best spent.
Phone words increase the response to advertising.
Case studies in Australia have shown that using phone names in place of phone numbers can increase advertising response rates by 300%. That's three times more calls for every ad - without spending any extra advertising dollars - just by switching from a phone number to a phone word. The increase in response rates is even greater when phone words are used in radio and outdoor advertising.
Reduce the cost of lead generation.
As advertising response rates go up, the cost of generating each lead comes down. As such, phone words can save advertisers considerable amounts of money in lead generation. For instance, if you double your advertising response rate, you're halving the cost of generating each lead.
Increase Profit
By helping you reduce the cost of generating each lead, and each sale, a phone name will give you a direct bottom line benefit - and a significant advantage over your competition.
Boost 'word of mouth' promotion
Think how easy it is for a customer to recommend a company's services when they use a phone word:
"Hey, I got great service from that company XYZ XYZ the other day. You should give them a call. Just dial 1300 XYZ XYZ."
Get calls when you aren't advertising
As consumers become increasingly aware of phone word many will simply guess a company’s phone word when they need particular goods or services. This is known as predictive dialling in the USA and has been proven to generate leads and sales long after a particular ad campaign has stopped.
Reinforce your brand
Every time someone dials a phone word, they're dialling a company name, a brand name, or a word that describes the goods and services they're looking to buy. As such, dialling a phone word will reinforce a brand far more than dialling a random sequence of numbers.
Match your domain Name
Ever seen a company advertise a domain number? Of course not - no one would remember it. If your domain name is www.brandname it usually makes sense for your phone name to be 1300 BRANDNAME
This is a unique opportunity to really maximise your advertising response rate and reinforce your brand.
