ISDN Phone Lines

ISDN, or Integrated Services Digital Network, are simply that; digital fixed lines as opposed to PSTSN’s analogue technology.

You cannot get ISDN as a single line (as in PSTN). This can be a waste for a small business only wanting 3 lines – they must pay for 4. This needs to be considered when selecting your phone system. With PSTN, you can add a line as your business grows, or reduce a line if you reduce the need for calling. ISDN doesn’t have quite the same flexibility.

ISDN does have other features though that could justify the inconvenience of a spare line.

Direct Indial Range (DID) gives you the opportunity to have direct numbers for staff. Imagine you have 2 ISDN2 services, you can make 4 simultaneous calls. You may have 9 staff, but they don’t all make calls at the same time so 4 lines (also called channels) are sufficient to service the 9 handsets you run through the PABX. With DID, each handset can have it’s own direct in dial number. You have 9 phone numbers but only 4 lines. DID numbers are provided in lots of 100, so plenty of allowance is given for growth.

ISDN Phone Lines are sold in a few different ways. These  include ISDN2 (2 channels), or an ISDN10 (10 channels), ISDN20 (20 channels) or ISDN30 (30 channels).

ISDN2 - Smaller businesses tend to purchase their ISDN services in multiples of 2 lines (ISDN 2). Although these services can have as few as 2 channels, they are still able to make use of Direct In Dial numbers. As the business grows, you can add on ISDN2 services and assign numbers from your DID pool.

ISDN 10/20/30 - Larger companies  tend to purchase their ISDN services in lots of 10, 20 or 30 lines (called ISDN 10/20/30). Once you get into the higher range, this enables some cost benefits on line rental and call pricing.
